There are many things to love about the spring: warm weather, clear blue skies, and gardens bursting into bloom. But with the change of seasons, so too comes a change in the condition of our skin – in particular, acne. For many of us, a rise in temperature and more time spent outdoors often leads to breakouts. We looked to a few famous faces to find out just how they keep pesky acne at bay.

Nature’s Helpers

Kate Bosworth, star of the cult classic Blue Crush, channels nature’s healing powers to keep her complexion clear. Her secret? Evening primrose oil. “For me, this is an incredible lifesaver when it comes to minimizing blemishes and breakouts, particularly during hormonal times,” she said in an Instagram story posted by Lisa Eldridge, the renowned celebrity makeup artist. She uses the herbal remedy in supplement form which, according to The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, has been shown to assist with eczema, premenstrual syndrome, and breast pain due to the fatty acid GLA or gamma-linolenic acid.

Then there’s Nickelodeon star Victoria Justice who depends on good old apple cider vinegar to get rid of zits. “I make my own toner with Bragg Organic Apple Cider Vinegar,” she revealed to E! News. “I take about 4-6 oz. of bottled water and put in one teaspoon of the apple cider vinegar in a small plastic bottle. I use it in the morning after cleansing my skin and then at night, after taking off all my makeup. I love it because it’s all natural. Then, I just moisturize and I’m done.”

What about (soon-to-be) royalty? Meghan Markle dished to Allure about her acne remedy: “The one thing that I cannot live without when I’m traveling is a small container of tea tree oil. It’s not the most glamorous thing, but if you get a cut, a mosquito bite, a small breakout, no matter what it is, it’s my little cure-all. It’s inexpensive, it’s small enough to carry on, and I bring it with me all the time.”

Blackheads Be Gone

Those tiny black dots all along your nose and T-zone might not be instantly noticeable to others but to your own eyes, they’re all you can see. Sound familiar? Take this advice from Riverdale star Madelaine Petsch. “The [Bioré] pore strips have always been a staple for me,” she told People.com. “I like products where you can really feel like it’s working, and of course you can see all your blackheads getting ripped out… With Bioré’s new Baking Soda Acne Cleansing Foam you really feel like it’s working and I like that—I need that in a face product.”

Don’t Forget Your Diet

What it all boils down to though is still what you put in your mouth, as Natalie Portman, Rihanna and Victoria Beckham will all attest to. Portman told The Cut that since going vegan, her complexion brightened up for the better. “I cut out dairy and eggs, and I never had a breakout after,” she said. Rihanna’s advice is somewhat simpler. “When I feel like my skin has had it, I cut out all alcohol and overdo the water,” she told Cosmopolitan UK. Victoria Beckham’s advice, meanwhile, requires a little more commitment. “I see a dermatologist in LA, called Dr Harold Lancer, who is incredible,” she told Net-a-Porter magazine in 2016. “I’ve known him for years — he sorted my skin out. I used to have really problematic skin and he said to me, ‘You have to eat salmon every single day.’ I said, ‘Really, every day?’ And he said, ‘Yes; breakfast, lunch or dinner, you have to eat it every single day.'” Extreme, maybe. But salmon rates very high in omega 3 fatty acids which are powerful anti-inflammatory agents for detoxing the body.
